Refreshing Pomegranate Tea

Back in college thanks to a couple of my friends, Korean movies, and Korean people and all things Korean became all too dear to me. Fast-forwarding from then to now in the world of tea, the Koreans have quite an array of refreshing teas. I find that most if not all, their tea recipes use a combination of fresh fruit and some form of sweetening. Today I’m drinking a refreshing Pomegranate tea or Seoklyu-cha.

This is a Korean tea that I discovered thanks to Maangchi. One article called her YouTube’s Korean Julia Child. I thoroughly enjoyed watching her prepare this tea. She pronounced the tea in Korean as Sung- New Cha.

Pomegranate is one of the most powerful, nutrient dense foods for overall good health. It is a great source of fiber, lowers blood pressure, cholesterol and other cardiac risk factors. –

The pomegranate I used wasn’t a bright red, but more of a pinkish red. Which is why my tea is more pink than red. Maangchi deseeded the pomegranate by tapping the skin with a wooden spoon. This was something I tried for the first time. Usually deseeding a pomegranate ends up being quite a messy task for me. But this technique was a much better way to go about it.

While drinking this tea, everything slowed down for me. Great natural color and deliciously sweet flavor.
If you happen to have some pomegranate that you have forgotten about in your refrigerator, then you need to make yourself a nice hot cup of Seoklyu-cha.

I used a medium-sized pomegranate which was enough for about 2-3 servings.

Pomegranate Tea

1 pomegranate
1/4 – 1/2 cup of sugar

In a bowl, deseed the pomegranate.

Make sure to remove any pieces of membrane that might have fallen while deseeding.

Gently crush the seeded pomegranate with a pestle or wooden spoon to release its juices.

Add sugar and give the pomegranate a good stir.

Add a tablespoon and some more of the pomegranate into a cup.

Pour hot water and give it a stir.
